Bioprocess Engineering Principles
The emergence and refinement of techniques in molecular biology has changed our perceptions of medicine, agriculture, and environmental management. Scientific breakthroughs in gene expression, protein engineering, and cell fusion are being translated by a strengthening biotechnology industry into revolutionary new products and services. Many a student has been enticed by the promise of biotechnology and the excitement of being near the cutting edge of scientific advancement. However, graduates trained in molecular biology and cell manipulation soon realize that these techniques are only part of the picture. Reaping the full benefits of biotechnology requires manufacturing capability involving the large-scale processing of biological material. Increasingly, biotechnologists are being employed by companies to work in cooperation with chemical engineers to achieve pragmatic commercial goals. For many years, aspects of biochemistry and molecular genetics have been included in chemical engineering curricula, yet there has been little attempt until recently to teach aspects of engineering applicable to process design to biotechnologists.
This textbook is the first to present the principles of bioprocess engineering in a way that is accessible to biological scientists. Other texts on bioprocess engineering currently available assume that the reader already has engineering training. On the other hand, chemical engineering textbooks do not consider examples from bioprocessing, and are written almost exclusively with the petroleum and chemical industries in mind. This publication explains process analysis from an engineering point of view, but refers exclusively to the treatment of biological systems. Over 170 problems and worked examples encompass a wide range of applications, including recombinant plant and animal cell cultures, immobilized catalysts, as well as traditional fermentation systems.
Introduction to Thermal and Fluids Engineering
This innovative book uses unifying themes so that the boundaries between thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid mechanics become transparent. It begins with an introduction to the numerous engineering applications that may require the integration of principles and tools from these disciplines. The authors then present an in-depth examination of the three disciplines, providing readers with the necessary background to solve various engineering problems. The remaining chapters delve into the topics in more detail and rigor. Numerous practical engineering applications are mentioned throughout to illustrate where and when certain equations, concepts, and topics are needed.
Diecast Boxes – What You Must Know About Them
Metal boxes are used popularly for all purposes because they are sturdy and durable. Most electronic implements need to be stored in a way that they will be away from heat, dust and harmful chemicals. Such metal boxes that are made of aluminum and diecast in fact are most reliable.
Diecast boxes can be used to store all kinds of objects and important tools, as they remain air tight and water proof. These boxes are in fact ideal for storing pneumatic and hydraulic objects and equipment. The metal functions as a heat screen as well. The material is such that even though the box is robust and sturdy, it’ll remain light weight.
Bmw Tops International Engine Awards
From the eighth to the tenth of this month, Stuttgart, Germany played host to the 2007 Engine Expo. The said event is the largest of its kind in the world and is the ninth time that the event was held. This year’s Engine Expo featured the most number of exhibitors in its history. The affair is held in a bigger venue than the previous exhibits. This is a necessary step to accommodate the number of exhibitors showing off the latest in engine technology.
The said occasion hosted the unveiling of different technologies in areas such as engine design, engine electronics, electric and hybrid powertrain technology, engine testing, fuels and lubricants, engine materials, emission controls, quality control and production technology. The event is highlighted with the International Engine of the Year Awards. The said awarding ceremony saw German car manufacturer BMW rack up a total of seven awards for their engines.
